I originally wrote this article while on a long drive early in the morning on the way to a photo shoot. I was driving on an open road with no music, just getting lost in my thoughts while typing this post on my iPhone via Siri…
My cousin Callie got married recently, and I saw a handful of photos from the wedding on Facebook. Another cousin named Jonathan, who I haven’t seen in about 20 years, was in one of the pictures, and seeing him immediately brought back memories…
I remember playing with Jonathan at his house in Georgia. If I had to guess, I’d say he was probably 12 and I was about six years old. We played a game where I tried to throw a ball through an opening between the top of a doorframe and a metal rod that stretched across the doorframe about a foot from the top of it. Every time I tried to throw the ball through the gap Jonathan would try to block it. And every time he successfully swatted it away, he yelled, “Rejected!”
It’s been close to 30 years since we played that game, but over the course of the past few decades, that memory has randomly popped into my head more than a handful of times, and I’m not really sure why. Maybe because it was just a fun time and an enjoyable moment, but whatever the case, as a “little kid”, getting to play such a cool game with a “big kid” had an impact on me.
I’m sure we can all think of moments, whether good or bad, when someone has had an impact on us. However, it’s not always easy to remember that we too have an impact on other people. The reason I wanted to write and share this is as much of a reminder for myself as it is for anyone reading it.
What are some moments that have had an impact on you? Who are the people who have impacted you? Can you think of strangers that had an impact on you? Random people who have no clue that you remember their words, actions, or gestures all these years later?
It makes you wonder what kind of impact you’ve had on people that you aren’t even aware of… Who will you have an impact on today?
